Discover the Timeless Beauty and Versatility of Sungkai Wood: The Perfect Choice for Quality Craftsmanship
Introduction
Sungkai, commonly known in Malaysia as the wood of Peronema canescens (Verbenaceae), is a prized material in the woodworking and construction industries. With its heartwood ranging from cream-colored to light yellow or light brown, Sungkai closely resembles teak wood, earning it the nickname “White Teak” in the trade.
It is also known by various local and regional names, such as Jati Londo, Jati Sabrang, Kurus, and Sungkai in Indonesia, as well as Khoeilai, Sakae, and Sangkae in Thailand.
Key Characteristics of Sungkai
Density
Sungkai is moderately hard and medium in weight, with an air-dry density of 520–730 kg/m³, making it a reliable choice for both structural and aesthetic purposes.
Natural Durability
This wood is rated as moderately durable, offering an average service life of approximately three years in ground contact. While it is susceptible to pinhole beetle attacks, it shows moderate resistance to drywood termites and is resistant to powder-post beetle damage.
Preservative Treatment
Sungkai wood is easy to treat with preservatives, enhancing its lifespan and making it an excellent material for long-term applications.
Texture and Grain
The wood has a moderately fine to moderately coarse texture with an uneven finish. Its grain varies from straight to wavy, adding visual appeal to finished products.
Strength Properties
Sungkai is moderately strong, making it suitable for both functional and decorative uses.
Machining Properties
Sungkai is relatively easy to work with, although its silica content may cause saws to blunt more quickly. While planing and turning yield moderate results, boring and sanding perform exceptionally well, ensuring high-quality finishes.
